The Air Plan’s principal purpose is to maintain air quality for people’s health and cultural wellbeing, or to improve it. To improve air quality in a number of Canterbury towns and cities (called Clean Air Zones in the Air Plan), cleaner forms of heating are being encouraged.
Open fires and older style burners are being phased out. In a number of areas, they can no longer be used.
The first of a number of local bans on the use of open fires and solid fuel burners older than 15 years became effective in Christchurch and Kaiapoi in 2010. Similar bans applied in Ashburton from 2011, Rangiora from 2012, Timaru from 2016, and Waimate and Geraldine from 2017.
Christchurch, Kaiapoi, Rangiora, Ashburton, Timaru and Geraldine have lists of all building consents issued for the installation of fuel burners in the last 15 years or longer. In some cases, checking with the district council building consent teams will be required.
If your address search fails to come up with any results, grab a copy of your rates demand from your local council and find the Legal Description of your property. Type the 'Legal Description' into the address search box instead of your postal address to search the Solid Burner Register.

Why is this happening?
Unfortunately there is no addressing standard in New Zealand that is linked directly to land parcels and valuations of those land parcels. These records are held under different separate databases and local authorities. We strive to maintain the best match possible, but this match is not 100% of all parcels / addresses in Canterbury.
Environment Canterbury potentially has information regarding burners at this property which has not yet been validated and cannot be displayed to the public.
